1. Introduction

Project title: “ Training course for female DJ's”, featuring Digital Culture/Play4U Dj crew (Subotica), Tranzistor (Copenhagen) and Organisazija.ba (Sarajevo)

2. Background and visions

Only few girls are taking active part in the first row of cultural environment and performing arts. This tendency was confirmed during the Wired DJ Networking Project, carried out in late 2002. Although the few established female DJ's connected to the network are in a rather good position to get gigs, and seem to be popular with organisers and audience.

Wired will discuss and promote sex role issues in cultural environment, and if there is a shortcut to get girls in the front row of performing arts, and thereby inspire others to break sex role patterns, DJ'ing could be the one.

To involve more female performers and activists in Wired network and organisations is a goal itself. In a peace building context, in general all fields of society where men are not entirely dominant are likely to be less violent and more tolerant...

3. Activity Objectives

The training should lead to more girls being visible as performing DJ's, and thereby challenging sex role patterns in the cultural environment, and giving other girls belief in their own ability to perform music or be culturally active.

4. Target group

Primary target group: Girls, connected to the network, interested in learning rules and techniques to be able to perform in public as a DJ.

Secondary target groups: Organisers and audience, who will notice girls present as performing Dj's. Girls who will get inspired by experiencing female DJ's performing.

5. Outputs

•  Girls able to start performing as DJ's in public after the training course, using the network and each others contacts. Indicators: a) The amount of participants starting to perform in public or developing their DJ'ing skills in a 1 year period after the training course, b) The number of activities directly or indirectly depending on contacts established on the training course, monitored in a 1 year periode.

•  Female DJ's performing on and taking part in Wired events or gigs arranged by Wired organisations. Cross boarder activities initiated by or including female DJ's. Indicators: a) Wired organisers are aware of and using female DJ's when planning events, b) amount of events organised by or with participation of female DJ's from the network. Evaluated by the end of 2005.

•  Awareness amongst participnts and trainers on gender issues in cultural life and the possible role of female DJ's. Indicators: Discussions on the subject during the training course and possible further acitvities by trainers. Content of discussions during the seminar. Trainers are initiating follow up, more training or just co-operation on gigs afterwards. Monitored till end of 2005.

6. Risks

- Training is not sufficient for getting participants started as DJ's.
- Participants can not be found
- Competition and jealousy are obstructing the project.
- Gender issues will not find sustainable response in the network

7. Organisational Framework

Johannes Batzer/Gimle (DK) will contact and connect the trainers (1 DK, 1 SEE) and host organisation (either Digital Culture in Subotica or Organisazija.ba in Sarajevo), and be overall responsible for monitoring the process.

Narrative and financial reporting: Narrative reporting by trainers, responsible for guidance: Johannes Batzer. Finacial report: Host organisation.

8. Detailed description of the activity

2 trainers, experienced female DJ's from SEE and DK, and 5 – 8 participants from different cities in SEE will attend the training course. There will be 2,5 days of training, practising and discussions, and a low key public performance last evening. Host organisation will have the oppotunity to organise a gig for the trainers, and the paticipants to see them perform in public.

The training course will take place in either Sarajevo or Subotica, since both cities host main organisations for Wired DJ's in SEE. Both have the capacity to set up the training course and a public performance.

Basic requirements: Food and accommodation, 2 pairs of decks, and a public venue accessible.

The activity will be realized throughout November 2004.

Participants will be elected by preparation team/trainers.
